Arguments Against Gay Marriage: Marriage Is for Procreation
Ethical arguments against same-sex marriage laws - ABC Religion & Ethics
New Hampshire joins four other states — Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and Vermont — in legalizing gay marriage. Heterosexuals should not be treated preferentially when the state carries out that role. And no one is harmed by the union of two consenting gay people. Some religious or secular institutions would recognize gay marriages; others would not; still others would call them domestic partnerships or assign another label. Join whichever group you wish. Regrettably, government has interceded, enacting more than 1, federal laws dealing mostly with taxes or transfer payments, and an untold number of state laws dealing with such questions as child custody, inheritance and property rights.
The Threat of Same-Sex Marriage
In: Philosophy and Psychology. Homosexuality has been the topic of ethical debates for many years, concerning the rights of homosexuals, and whether or not they should be treated equally. In the modern day homosexuality is comparatively far more tolerated than in the past, when it had been at least somewhat illegal until progressive thinking led to the Sexual Offences Act, which set the wheels in motion towards ending the inequality between homosexuals and heterosexuals. Discrimination against homosexuality, however, is still fairly prominent, and the lack of ease in passing laws relating to homosexuality suggests that there is still a lot of unease surrounding the topic.
You know the funny thing is that I was never planning on doing this topic. Well frankly I thought it would have been kind of redundant — after all the case for gay marriage has been so thoroughly covered in Australia and most developed nations, that going into the ethics of it would be like explaining the case for, I dunno, vaccinations or something. I mean seriously, have we not already had this debate and come to a conclusion as a society? In other words, if we are going to argue that gay marriage should be made legal and the definition of marriage be altered accordingly, then it is on us to prove that case justified — not on the defenders of traditional marriage to defend their stance.
